Our History

The Cambridge Supermarket is locally-owned and operated by Francis and Joyce Kohout. Francis began his career in the grocery industry in January of 1968 working for Hinky Dinky. He places the orders for Dairy and Grocery Departments. Joyce has been working along side Francis since 1984. She maintains the computer system, pricing index, and accounting for the store.

They purchased the business on June 4, 1984, and have been active members of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce since that time. The Cambridge Supermarket is a member of Affiliated Foods Midwest and is served from the warehouse in Norfolk, NE. The Affiliated grocery group "Buys Together To Sell For Less."

Over the years the Cambridge Supermarket has expanded a number of times. The purchase of the former Doug's Place allowed more space for storage overflow, offices and a new room to house beverage displays, chips and snacks, and pet food. After the Cambridge Clarion moved to their new location the Cambridge Supermarket expanded a second time. The new expansion opened up the opportunity for more remodeling to be done to allow a special section for magazines, greeting cards, gifts and candles as well as a sit-down eating area. At the same time the meat department was also expanded to include Chester's International and To-Go Sandwiches.

Most recently, they upgraded the compressors that keep the storage coolers cold. The compressors now utilize recycled freon instead of water as coolant. New coolers were also installed throughout the store to be more energy efficient. Read more about the changes they are making to become more energy efficient in "Going Green."
